Confirmation Checker

Use our tool below to check if you need Confirmation (Scottish probate). Many estates don’t need it – it depends on what the person owned.

  • How it works

We’ll ask a few short questions about the estate. It usually takes less than 1-minute to complete, or slightly longer if any property was owned jointly with someone else.

    When you finish, you’ll receive:

    • a short summary explaining whether Confirmation is needed
    • a brief explanation of why that result applies
    • links to the next step or relevant Help Centre articles

You’re responsible for the accuracy of your answers. We’re not a law firm and we don’t provide legal or tax advice.

  • What you'll need

If you can, have this information to hand but don’t worry if you don’t. The checker will tell you what to find.

    • Whether the person who died normally lived in Scotland
    • Whether any bank/insurer/organisation has already asked for a Grant of Confirmation
    • Whether they owned property in the UK, and whose name is on the title
    • If property is jointly owned: whether the title includes a survivorship destination/clause (wording often looks like “...and to the survivor of them”)
